An Unusual Chinese Export Porcelain Teabowl, Late Qianlong or Jiaqing Period c.1790-1810. Decorated in Gold with the Name “Maria Sturges” Within an Oval Cartouche with a Simple Linked Border Above. The Interior Rim with a Blue Enamel Band Between Gilt Lines.

Information
The restrained, almost minimal decoration of this teabowl shows the influence of the Neo-Classical movement was made at a time when Chinese export porcelain was often of low quality. The Chinese porcelain trade was suffering for two reasons, first European and English porcelain factories were producing cheaper porcelain, but also the wars within Europe made shipping difficult and reduced demand. This teabowl was probably made for the American market.
