ARITA, Probably Nangawa Kilns, c.1660 – 1670 Japanese Porcelain

A Fine and Rare 17th Century Japanese Porcelain Serving Dish Made for the Domestic Market, Probably Nangawa Kilns, Arita, Kanbun Period c.1660-1670. This Crisply Potted Flat Dish is Constructed from Fine Pure Porcelain of an Usually White Colour, it has Steep Sides and a Deep Thin Foot with a Rounded Footrim. Decorated in Blue and White the Design Consists of Two Shikishi (special paper reserved for painting or calligraphy), One Overlapping the Other. The Top Shikishi is of Two Tojin (foreigners, probably Chinese), the Lower Shikishi has a Corner Folded Over and is Decorated with a Trellis Diaper Pattern in a Dark Cobalt Blue Against a Paler Cobalt Ground. The Back and Base with Numerous Concentric Lines, the Center with a Kaku Fuku Mark.
