A Late 17th or Early 18th Century Japanese Porcelain Dish, Arita Kilns.

A Japanese Blue and White porcelain dish, Arita kilns c.1690-1720. Painted in unusually rich tones of cobalt with a jardiniere (or perhaps a center) planted with a flowering plant among rocks. The border with ‘The Three Friends of Winter’. The base with an apocryphal mark Chenghua mark, Ming Dynasty 1465 – 1487.

Condition
In excellent condition, no damage but the surface is covered with fine clean crazing to the glaze. There is a kiln spot to the well, left of the jardiniere. There are a few minor stains to the reverse where there are small burst bubbles to the glaze.

The Three Friends of Winter :
These three plants, Pine, Bamboo and Prunus, signify perseverance. Neither the Pine nor the Bamboo shed their leaves in winter and the Plum flowers at the very end of the winter, heralding the arrival of spring.
