Information

Cornelis Pronk 1691-1759, Designs For the V.O.C. :
The Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk made four designs for the V.O.C. to be taken to China, copied onto porcelain and then sent back to Holland. The designs are Chinoiserie in style, two of the original water-colours are still in existence in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, 'The Doctors Visit' and 'The Parasol Ladies'. The present example is somewhat different to the original design of 1734, the scene has become rather more relaxed and looks rather more Chinese. The original design shows two ladies, on holding the parasol for the other, the present example shows a young attendant holding the parasol for a lady. Chinese paintings normally show manual jobs being carried out by a younger or maybe just smaller person.
