KANGXI 1662 – 1722. Chinese Export Porcelain
A Pair of Unusual Chinese Export Porcelain Plates, Kangxi Period c.1690-1700. These Large Plates are Based on a European Pewter Form, the Central Scene Shows a Man and Woman in a Building Watching Children Play in a Garden. The Unusual Border (See references below) Consists of Ladies at Leisure in a Garden Setting, the Unusual Base Design is of a Peony Flower.

- There are seven known examples of a Dutch armorial design for Johannes Camphuijs (born in Haarlem in 1634 and died at Batavia in 1695) which are the same shape as the present example, they also share the highly unusual border and ornamental base design. See : Chinese Armorial Porcelain For The Dutch Market (Dr Jochen Kroes, Waanders Publishers,2007.ISBN978-90-400-83310) page 105, plate 1. The seven examples of this blue and white armorial design, one of which is now in the Victoria and Albert museum in London, are plates of the same size and shape as our example. The present example is undoubtedly contemporary or nearly contemporary with the Camphuijs plates. For an 18th century Japanese Imari plate of this shape after a European pewter original, with a very similar figurative border and decorated base, see stock number 20778 in `Sold Item`. It is highly probable the Japanese example is based on our version or the Camphuijs armorial.
