A 17th or 18th century Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Dish with Mandarin Ducks
A 17th or 18th Century Japanese Blue and White Porcelain dish, Arita kilns c.1680-1730. This thickly potted Japanese porcelain dish is painted in silvery-grey tones of cobalt blue (slightly blurred) with a pair of Mandrin Ducks on the water, one with its head under the surface of the water, near rocks and flowering plants. The cavetto is painted with flowering plants, the back is painted with a Karakusa scrolling border and a mark within a double square. Mandarin Ducks can represent a happy marriage as this tree nesting duck mates for life.
