A Rare Southern Song (1127-1279) Stoneware Dish Decorated with Applied Slip with Abstract Designs Possibly Based on Plant Forms. The Center of the Dish with a Circle Wiped Clear of Glaze so the Piece Could be Stacked in the Kiln. It is Possible that this Dish comes from a Kiln in Fujian Province.

Information
Slip is a mixture of clay and water, which when applied in a liquid form acts as an under-coat to hide the body of the ceramic prior to a coloured glaze being added. This is especially important where the body colour is strong and the glaze is rather translucent. Slip in also used to decorate ceramics, rather like one might decorate a cake. A further use of slip is as a adhesive when the potter is abutting two leather hard ceramic surfaces together. This process is called 'lutting'.
