SHUNZHI 1644 – 1661 Transitional Porcelain

A Rare Shunzhi Blue and White Porcelain Beaker Directly Copying Dutch Engraved Silver of the Mid-17th Century. Early Qing Dynasty, Shunzhi Period c.1650. The Flaring Beaker Form with a Reeded Base has an Unglazed Inner Rim for a Cover (now missing). The Blue and White Decoration is a Close Copy of 17th Century Baroque Silver Engraving, The Top Panel is of Scrolling Foliage Including Flowering Tulips Set within a Strapwork Band Which has Flowering Scrolls Suspended as Well as Fruit From Bows.

The design relates to a number of mid-17th century Dutch silver beakers but the Chinese have made the design fuller filling the main register where as on the Dutch prototypes this area would have quite a lot of blank space. The present example is clearly from the Shunzhi period but a later Kangxi example, with cover exists. The painting of the Kangxi beaker is very different and the design has been much simplified, see references below.
