A Rare Transitional Kraak Porcelain Beer Jug or Mug

A Rare Transitional Kraak Porcelain Beer Jug or Possibly Mug, Late Ming or Early Qing, Chongzhen or Shunzhi c.1640-1650. This large Kraak object was made right at the end of the V.O.C.’s (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) period of commissioning Kraak ware. The Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) commissioned beer mugs, jugs and other European forms such as mustard pots in the 1630s until around the mid-1650s. The present form is akin to some German stoneware that was popular in the Netherlands and much of Europe at the time. However, this piece was probably based on a Dutch wood model sent over to be copied.
