A Late 17th Century Japanese Kraak Style Dish
Edo Period c.1670 - 1690
A Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Dish in the Kraak Style, Arita Kilns 1670 – 1690. The center of this heavily potted Japanese porcelain dish is decoration with two fruiting branches which is not based on Kraak ware. On the left is a branch of pomegranate and on the right with finger-citrus, which is also called ‘Buddha’s-hand citrus’ (Citrus medica). The Kraak style border has typical panels with peony and precious objects. Japanese porcelain dishes of this type were made in Japan to fill a gap in the market after the V.O.C. stopped ordering Kraak porcelain in the 1650’s.
