An Unusual Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Dish
Genroku Period 1688 - 1704
An Rare Japanese Dish Arita or Kakiemon Kilns, Genroku Period 1688 – 1704. This unusual porcelain dish which is an indented square with the corners cut, depicts four stylised butterflies, painted using two tones of cobalt blue with wax resist. The reverse has a circle of grasses over-lapping the footrim. This asymmetrical placing of a circle of decoration over the circle of the foot could have only been thought of by a Japanese potter, it would be an anathema to any self-respecting Chinese potter. However, I think that to modern eyes this looks ingenious as well as rather appealing.
