An Unusual Large 17th Century Japanese Porcelain Ewer

An Unusual Large 17th Century Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Ewer, Arita Kilns c.1660-1680. This unusual large ewer, perhaps intended for hot water or wine, was probably made for the Japanese market. The upright walls of this vessel are thinly potted, about 4mm, the flat handle is about 9mm. The decoration is of flowering peony with reeds and flying insects. The handle and spout terminus are decorated with Karakusa scrollwork. Flat handles such as the one on this object are a Japanese concept, they were probably mould made. They are normally found on pieces where the handle arches over the body of the vessel.
