A Large Kangxi Blanc de Chine Porcelain Figure of Damo Holding a Shoe, Dehua Kilns, Fujian Province. This large heavy Late 17th century figure of Damo, the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma is mould made, it is criply moulded with allot of fine detail. The Indian monk Bodhidharma, called Damo in China, is credited with founding the Chan (or Zen) tradition of East Asian Buddhism, see below for a carving Damo. The shoe relates to Damo crossing the Yangzi, and his journey to the West, with only one shoe. He is depicted on crashing waves, his chest shows his ribs, a sign of frugality and inner spiritual strength. Made from moulded sections, this Kangxi figure is typical of the period.

The Indian Monk Bodhidharma

He is called Damo in China and is credited with founding the Chan (or Zen) tradition of East Asian Buddhism.

Carving of Bodhidharma at the Shaolin Monastery, a renowned monastic institution recognized as the birthplace of Chan Buddhism and the cradle of Shaolin Kung Fu. It is located at the foot of Wuru Peak of the Songshan mountain range in Dengfeng County, Henan Province, China.
