A Large 18th Century Dutch Decorated Chinese Export Porcelain Tea Bowl and Saucer.

Early Qianlong c.1740.

A Large 18th Century Dutch Decorated Chinese Export Porcelain Tea Bowl and Saucer, made at Jingdezhen in China, early Qianlong c.1740. The Dutch decoration is from the same period. The tea bowl and saucer was commissioned by the V.O.C. as a white porcelain too be painted in Europe, indeed many V.O.C. cargos included blanks to be decorated in the Netherlands. Its though that Approximately 10% of the Dutch East India Company’s imports were blanks. However, although this piece doesn’t have any Chinese painting on it, the surface is beautifully and delicately carved. The surface of the saucer and the exterior of the tea bowl have An Hua (secret or hidden decoration). This restrained decoration is mostly lost under the thick rich exuberant Dutch decoration of peony and prunus. Despite the enamels being Dutch, the style of painting is clearly based on Chinese Famille Rose porcelain.
