17th Century Kutani Style Dish
A Small Ko-Kutani Style Dish, Arita Kilns c.1640-1650. This early Japanese porcelain square serving dish has indented corners as well as the four sides. The upright edges are dressed with iron oxide. The central scene shows a landscape with green and yellow rocks with trees growing from them. They are flank by two modest straw roofed buildings and trees. The diaper border was added before the enamel decoration, it was fired first prior to glazing, the enamels were added after the glaze firing. The base has an underglaze blue seal mark. - A very small slender shallow chip to rim filled and a similar chip directly opposite (not filled). Some small glaze cracks.
