A Rare Kangxi Blanc de Chine Porcelain Beer Mug with English Gilding

Kangxi c.1690 - 1720.

A Rare Kangxi Blanc de Chine Porcelain Beer Mug from the Collection of Mrs. Helen Espir (see Provenance). Made at Dehua in Fujian province, this Chinese Blanc de Chine mug was made for export to England between c.1690-1720. The lappet border that frames the central ribbing of the pot is very similar to the decoration around the base of man Kangxi Blanc de Chine beakers, some of these were decorated in England as early as c.1710. The form is apparently derived from English silver, it resembles moulded leaf jugs produced at the Worcester porcelain factory in the 1750s, these were described as Dutch jugs in the Worcester inventories. The gilt decoration decoration is in the Neo-Classical style, was probably added at the Chamberlain’s Worcester factory in the 1780s. Helen Espir is known for her ground-breaking book ; European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, 1700 -1830 (Helen Espir, Jorge Welsh Books, 2005).
