A Set of Five Japanese Porcelain Dishes in the Kraak Style

c.1660 - 1670

A Set of Five Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Dishes in the Kraak Style, Arita Kilns c.1660 – 1670. The Kraak style border has typical panels with a large flowering plants and precious objects. The center is decorated with a large flying insect on a rock with flowering plants and water. Japanese porcelain dishes of this type were made in Japan to fill a gap in the market after the V.O.C. stopped ordering Kraak porcelain in the 1650’s. However, being a set of five with a Japanese box indicates these were probably not exported and were therefore used within Japan. For a nearly identical dish see : Complete Catalogue of Shibata Collection (Contributors Saga Kenritsu Kyūshū Tōji Bunkakan. Published by the Kyushu Ceramic Museum, 1990) page 165, plate 1262.
