A Small 18th Century Japanese Porcelain Dish

c.1730 - 1770

A Small 18th Century Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Dish, Arita kilns c.1730-1770. This somewhat eccentric design incorporates the top of a bamboo plant within a stylised cloud, below is a torn sprig of flowering peony. The design is cut through by the use of concentric circle dividing the cavetto with the well of the dish. The glaze is blue in tone. The back is decorated with a loose scrolling Karakusa and the base has a poorly drawn Chenghua mark (1465 – 1485). This Chinese Ming mark is frequently found on Japanese porcelain.
