An 18th Century Japanese Porcelain Dish

c.1740 - 1760

A Mid-18th Century Japanese Porcelain Dish. This thickly potted mould made Arita porcelain dish is very heavy. It is painted with a large Japanese iris (Iris ensata) with swirling waves below. The painter has used three very different tones of cobalt blue, the palest tone has been added directly as a wash without the normal outline being used. Gilding has been used sparingly as a highlight. The border is of a clear celadon green. This is one of the most successful designs I have seen of this mid-18th century group.
