Information
Blue and white Kangxi porcelain vases of this type were supplied as part of a five piece garniature or sold as pairs, or perhaps individually. The type of decoration displayed here has similarities with some of the pieces recovered from a shipwreck that is contemporary with the present vase, the Vung Tau Cargo, which dates to c.1690-1700. The present example is competently painted, the brushstrokes are vigorously applied, adding a dynamic rhythm to what could otherwise have been a rather drap design. The painting is further lifted by the good quality cobalt employed, and also because of the pure white porcelain which has been given a lustrous clear glaze.
